Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Shared Ride Program?
Reduced fares are available to riders who are willing to share their trip with other passengers. Persons 65 years of age or older are entitled to receive these trips and pay only 15% of the reduced shared ride fares. The program has been enacted by the Pennsylvania State Legislature. Funds from the Pennsylvania State Lottery pay for the remaining 85% trip fares through a grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.
I'm not yet 65 years of age. Can I still ride with Community Transit?
Yes. While only senior citizens age 65 and older are entitled to the 15% fares, anyone from the general public may request a shared ride. Full fares begin at $19.45 each way.
I have an 11:00 a.m. appointment with my doctor. When can I expect the vehicle to arrive.
For example, if you have an 11:00 a.m. doctor's appointment, we will put in our computer a pick-up time of 10:00 a.m. Our goal is to get you to your appointment on time, so we ask that you be ready to go by 9:45 a.m. , and your vehicle will arrive sometime between 9:45 a.m. and 10:30 a.m., in enough time to deliver you to your doctor's appointment in time. (We might schedule the pick-up time a bit earlier if the distance to your appointment is very long, as is sometimes the case for people going to specialty doctors at distant hospitals in Philadelphia.) This "window" assures that we can deliver you to your appointment on time and that we can schedule other people to be picked up during that window as well, who may live nearby and/or are going in the same direction as you.
I called to schedule a trip to see my doctor. The appointment time was 9:00 a.m. You asked me if I could change my appointment time. Why?
Community Transit encourages passengers to make appointments or plan trips which allow us to make the most efficient use of our resources. We transport large groups of passengers to and from programs such as Adult Day Cares, Senior Centers and Dialysis Units during our peak hours. We recommend that our passengers schedule individual appointments so that their pick up and return times occur during the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. We do understand that while it may sometimes be necessary to schedule an appointment at an earlier or later time, it may not always be possible for Community Transit to provide the transportation. We will always try to accommodate this request, but may not be successful, especially in situations where the customer is not near a program where a driver may become available at about 9:30 a.m., or if the distance to the appointment is greater than usual - i.e., outside Delaware County, or from one end of Delaware County to the other. We want to always be honest with our customers and tell them if we think we are going to have trouble getting a passenger to their destination on time.
I don't want to go to my appointment alone. May I bring along a companion with me? How much is the companion's fare?
Yes, you may bring along a companion to escort you. When you call to schedule your trip, you must inform the Customer Service Representative that a companion will be traveling with you, so that a seat may be reserved for them. If the ride is within Delaware County, a companion's fare will be $5.00 each way. If the ride is to Philadelphia or the other suburban counties, the charge will be $10.00 each way.
